Getting ready for my first NFT launch

Hey , treading new ground can sometimes be quite daunting and scary, that's kind of how I feel about launching my first NFT project - but I'm going to do it anyway - why?

I want to demystify the whole NFT ownership process for an audience for whom this might seem daunting. I want to make buying your first NFT really accessible.

If you're wondering what I am talking about, and what NFTs are, here's a simple primer into the space.

NFTs, Explained

What is fungible and what is non- fungible

Fungible means replaceable, i.e. if we went out in a group to a restaurant and we paid in cash and we got 2 £1 coins back in change.

It wouldn't matter which of the pound coins you or I took, essentially they are the same, i.e. they are fungible.

Non fungible on the other hand is the opposite of that.

In the real world, non fungible would be something like the deed to a house - there's only one of those deeds and critically, it proves ownership of that property and can't be replaced.

Okay, so how do I actually get one of these?

This is the part that can sometimes be a bit scary, but I hope I can demystify this for you.

You'll need a place to store your NFTs. The place to store NFTs is in a <gasp> digital wallet </gasp>.

I know what you're thinking, digital wallets mean crypto and crypto is linked to scams.

You're not entirely wrong, lots of crypto projects are scams, but not all are - please be very careful in this space, only listen to people who you trust in this space.

One of my friends told me to only store NFTs in my digital wallet and keep my real money well separated from this.

If you want to get yourself an NFT, you'll need to set up a digital wallet, don't worry it's not as scary as it seems.

So what digital wallet do I recommend?

The one I have gone for is a wallet called Meta Mask, Metamask.io - make sure if you ever click on a link for Meta Mask that you go to the one with the .io extension

How to Set Up METAMASK Wallet (NFT Tutorial)

This wallet will be your login for any of the NFT websites - I will be posting my first collection, Pixel Race on the NFT website OpenSea.

I hand drew all the elements in these images on my iPad and then used a generator to generate 100 unique combinations of the elements.

I am aiming in the next week or so to set these live on OpenSea at prices that are easily affordable.

I will aim to message this list first before putting out announcements on social media, if this is something you would like to own.

Wait a second, aren't NFTs bad for the environment?

Much of the criticism for the environmental damage* that minting and trading NFTs is targeted at the Ethereum blockchain.

I am using a layer 2 solution called Polygon, which is a much more eco friendly blockchain scaling solution.

I think experimenting and being prepared to fail is the best way to actually learn how to do anything, and whether doing a particular thing is worthwhile.

*just exactly what effect on the environment or not Ethereum has is up for debate - lots of the modern day things we do have an adverse effect on the environment.

Suffice to say there's a lot of people who have a lot to lose if blockchains become the new computing and trading platform.

You can bet those people will do everything they can to discredit anything that may disrupt their grip on financial power.

I have found it's always best to do my own research on the topic and form my own opinion rather than going with the crowd.
