3. A little help from friends
What I found most interesting was the reaction of some of my friends who I asked for backing for.
Maybe you have this too, I found that the friends who I asked help from fell into three main categories
- those who said 'yes' unreservedly
- those who ignored my messages
- those who said 'no' straight of the bat
Now while no one likes people saying 'no',
actually I prefer someone saying 'no' to me rather than not responding at all.
I found this when I made my first short film
Be Me way back almost 15 years ago (wow has it been that long - yikes). I asked some of my colleagues for their help.
Some of them said 'yes', others came up with various dependencies on what needed to be unblocked before they could help me.
Essentially after multiple chasing up attempts they never helped.
What I've learnt over the years are, if you ask someone for help, there are only two answers
- 'yes'
- any other answer than 'yes', like, 'let me get back
to you', 'when do you need it done by', 'I have to check my calendar' - whatever variant of this, it's meaning is 'no'
Don't spend too much of your time on these people, instead focus on finding people who will say 'yes' without you having to need to finish the sentence.
