hey, did you get your comic book and when you can get issue 1 too

Although it's still bitterly cold here in London, the days are getting brighter and lasting a  bit longer - who knows, I may even get out of work whilst it's still daylight.

Have you managed to get your pdf digital comic preview yet?  If you not I've hosted it on my GDrive, you can grab your copy here.

When are the next wave of pages coming in?
So I've joined an online comic creator mastermind course - hosted by the excellent Tyler James Vogel at ComixLaunch.

This month, I was one of the people in the 'Hot Seat'.

The main takeaway was whether I should be aiming to make a printed comic book or to keep it as an online digital only offering

After much debate and soul searching, I've decided that initial Kickstarter, will be all about raising the funding for the online version first - with a number of digital only rewards.

I think this is the right decision to make for a number of reasons
  1. We now live in a digital first world - we can consume all our media on our phones, tablets and computers
  2. I can get you your comic book faster and at a lower cost by going digital - not only in terms of production, but the reduced funding goal means we can launch the Kickstarter earlier too.
  3. The team and I can focus on writing and making comic art rather than becoming a printing-fulfilment service
  4. The print campaign can still happen - I'm thinking after all the art is finished then we could launch a Kickstarter that will focus on only printing and fulfilment
It's a huge weight of my mind, knowing that essentially I've cut the target into a quarter of its original number.  I got a whole load of clarity this week, it feels great.

Want to help the comic book grow?
So I've put together this snazzy little landing page here - this where your own friends could get their own copy of the Digital Exclusive Preview.

There's a whole bunch of social sharing buttons on there, so when you share make sure to tag a friend who'd be interested in the comic book - not only will your friend get their own version of the preview, but it's a great way to rekindle old friendships too.

Also as promised here's part 3 of the - So you want to write your own comic book series
My background is as a screenwriter, I studied screenwriting for several years, having written screenplays that went onto become movies. I then moved onto writing TV, which was very different to writing for film - it's like I had learnt a whole set of tools but the pacing is rapidly different from writing from film to TV.

A couple of years back I made my theatrical directing debut and co-penned my first stage play - when you go from writing from film to stage, you lose a whole lot of the writing tools that would work in film, that clearly aren't going to work for the stage - like cutting between scenes, having close ups on actors etc.

Now the new challenge of writing a comic book.  In some ways there's a lot of unlearning to do, I think the biggest struggle was instead of thinking in terms of time as my primary axis, I now have to think of how panels will fit and link with each other on a page.  That and having to understand I didn't have the controls of movement of actors - in a comic book one panel can only show one action at a time.

Have a read of the full blog post, regardless of whether you're writing a comic book or any other book there's a lot in there for you - here's the link

Okay till next week, hope you have a great week, speak soon.

Thanks
