hey, first step on creating a graphic novel or any creative project

Published: Sun, 02/04/18

Hey ,

hope your week's been going well, it's been a week since I last emailed and this week making Digitopia seems to be getting crazier and crazier (though I love it, some part of me secretly yearns for the simple life again).

Here's what's been happening this week.

Part one of a four part blog series
-----------------------------------
So clearly I thought the best thing to do when life gets so hectic is to write it all up in a blog post - in fact I'm putting together a 'four parter' on how to make a graphic novel.

You can check out part 1 on how to write a graphic novel here

In this blog post I talk about what you need to do at the start of any project that is going to require a lot of work and dedication.

I actually filmed myself, so literally I can talk to you about it.

This week's question
--------------------
So if you watched my video on the blog post
http://www.digitopiafilm.com/writing/want-write-comics-part-1-start/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=bottomLink

I take you through the most important step when starting on really any project.

So tell me about a recent project you've done and what was the 'why' behind it?

Do you see a direct correlation between the success (or lack of) and the amount of time you spent on really understanding the 'why' behind it?

Drop me a line, either by hitting reply or putting a comment below the blog post (this is the better method as others can learn from your experience).

Want to help us grow the fan base?
----------------------------------
Absolutely you can, hitting 'Like' on any page of the web comic will post it to your social media - tagging someone directly who'd be interested in the comic will help them find it faster.

This will actually help make the graphic novel come to life faster.

How?

By gaining more fans of the comic book we'll be in a better position to run a successful Kickstarter, which means we can fund the rest of the project and bring the graphic novel to you that much sooner.

Not bad for just hitting 'Like'.

Want to catch up on the comic book?
-----------------------------------
I should really label this as you want to read it again, but just in case, here's a link to page 1

Project updates - the animated trailer is on its way
----------------------------------------------------
I actually just came of a call with Simon (as well as colouring and lettering the comic, Simon is also art directing with me and helping plan out the funding of the project) and Alex (our animation lead). We spent the morning going over the animated trailer we're putting together.

Though I've worked on lots of movies, I've never actually put together a trailer for a graphic novel before.

The real challenge is almost reverse to the challenge I faced a few years ago when I converted a screenplay into a script for a comic book.

I had to shift my thinking from moving images across multiple shots to static images within panels.

This morning we came full circle and we had to think how to bring movements, effects and cuts into these still images so they flow as an animation.

We're having super fun figuring it out and making up new terms as we go along - hopefully I'll have something to share with you in a few weeks.

Where's my surprise?
-------------------
Yes, I did promise you a surprise, we are putting final touches to it this week - we're almost there, but I want it to finished totally before I email it out to you. Most likely we'll have it ready for next week's email (if not you'll get another apology from me :)

Okay, hope your week goes well, I'll check back in with you next week.

Thanks

Farhan
